What is a Gift-in-Kind?
A Gift-in-Kind is transferring ownership of an asset, rather than selling the asset and
giving cash.
What kind of assets could I give?
• Appreciated investment property held more than a year - This may include stock, mutual
funds, bonds, real estate, or collectibles.
Donating appreciated stock allows you to contribute a sizable gift, even if the amount you
initially invested was relatively small.
For instance, perhaps you bought $10,000 of stock five years ago and that stock is now
worth $50,000. By donating it to Gateway Christian Academy, you are able to donate
$40,000 more than you originally invested.
• Personal property such as automobiles or jewelry
Why give Gifts-in-Kind?
Giving the asset to the school, then letting the school sell it, eliminates the potential capital
gains taxes and can increase after-tax proceeds.
What if I sell first then give cash?
You may be subject to capital gains taxes, thereby reducing the after tax proceeds from
the sale.
How does the tax benefit work?
• Itemized Deductions - The individual or business is allowed to include 100% of the
market value of most assets as charitable contributions for tax purposes, if held more than
one year.
• Capital Gains - The transfer of property does not generate a capital gains tax. The
school, as a tax exempt entity, will realize the full
market value, less transaction costs, at the time of sale without paying capital gains taxes.
